when she's talking about the stairs it is symbolizing her life and when she says that it has splinters and bottom torn up she is symbolizing how her life has been hard considering that the stairs to her life was hard to get up to and when her son feels as if his life is getting harder she encourages him to keep climbing. her courage is how she kept climbing the torn stairs...i hope this helps
