Who was Anne Hutchinson?
In the Antinomian Controversy, which shook the fledgling Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1636 to 1638, Anne Hutchinson played a crucial role as a Puritan religious reformer and counsellor. Her popularity and charismatic leadership style helped foment a doctrinal divide that threatened the Puritan religious community in New England.
Her strong religious beliefs were at odds with the established Puritan clergy in the Boston area. After being prosecuted and found guilty, she and many of her supporters were exiled from the colony
A number of ministers started to complain about Hutchinson's increasingly blatant accusations and some of her unconventional theological teachings as she started to charge that the local ministers (with the exception of Cotton and her husband's brother-in-law, John Wheelwright), were preaching a covenant of works rather than a covenant of grace.
The issue eventually turned into the so-called Antinomian Controversy, which resulted to her trial, conviction, and expulsion from the colony in 1637. This was followed by a church trial in March 1638 during which she was expelled from her parish.
What are women's rights?
The rights and privileges demanded by women and girls around the world are known as women's rights. They served as the inspiration for both the feminist movements of the 20th and 21st centuries as well as the women's rights movement in the 19th century.
Women's rights are institutionalized or supported by legislation, local tradition, and conduct in some nations, but are disregarded and suppressed in others.
They differ from more general ideas of human rights in that they contend that there is an innate historical and traditional prejudice against women and girls using their rights in favor of males and boys.
