of all the water on Earth, 97% is salt water, 3% is fresh water and much of this is locked up in ice. All living things need fresh water to survive. As populations grow, the demand for fresh water will increase. If humans can use desalinization plants to make the fresh water they need, more fresh water will be available for the plants and animals that need it.
