Solve this like the less than was an equal sign to start
3p-16<20
3p-16=20
Add sixteen to each side
3p-16+16=20+16
3p=36
Divide each side by 3 to get p by itself:
3p=36
p=12
Replace the equal sign with the less than sign again
p<12
