Volleyball and basketball have a variety of similarities and differences. Both volleyball and basketball are made up of a rubber layer, but volleyballs have a cheese-cloth type material for an outer layer while basketballs have a leather outer layer. Volleyball and basketball are both team sports, but a volleyball team has 6 players while a basketball team has anywhere from 12 to 20 players. Both sports have diverse positions, but volleyball has 6 positions (outside hitter, right side hitter, opposite hitter, setter, middle blocker, libero, and defense specialist), while basketball has 5 positions (point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center). Lastly, both sports were created in the 1890s, but volleyball was first played in 1895 and basketball was first played in 1891.
