What was the Articles of Confederation?

It was an agreement among the 13 original states of the U.S. that served as its first frame of government. It was approved after an intense debate (between 1776 - 1777) by the Second Continental Congress on November 15, 1777 and sent to the states for ratification.

Its ratification was done on March 1, 1781 after been agreed on by all the states. Its guiding principle was to establish and preserve the independence and sovereignty of the states. A weaker central government was established by the Articles, and its only received those powers which the former colonies had recognized as belonging to king and parliament.
