Visitors have long been deterred from landing and remaining on Yeronisos because of the unwelcoming surroundings, including the sheer cliffs, powerful currents, and lack of water. Since Byzantine times, the island's historic levels have been unaltered, making it one of Cyprus's really untamed landscapes.

What are the Yeronisos islands?

A tiny island called Yeronisos (Holy Island) is located opposite Pegeia and around 18 kilometers north of Paphos. It is 26000 square meters in size and reaches 21.65 meters above sea level. A soft marl core lies beneath the island's hard calcarenite crust, which is made up of Pleistocene marine terraces.

Yeronisos was already well-known to Roman author Pliny in the first century B.C., who mentions an island called "Hiera" close to Paphos in western Cyprus.

On Yeronisos, three phases of habitation have been documented by the excavations. The periods are- Early Chalcolithic (3800 BC), late Hellenistic (80-30 BC), and Byzantine (6th-7th century and 13th century).
