Phosphorus occurs in nature as part of a Phosphate ion. They are found mostly in ocean sediments, rocks.

  • The Phosphate in rocks is transferred to the soil through weathering.
  • Phosphate is then taken up by plants through roots
  • These plants are then consumed by the animals.
  • When these animals die, Phosphorus is again returned to the soil.
  • From soil, it gets transferred to oceans in the form of phosphorus sediments.
  • The amount of phosphorus is due to the excretion and death of aquatic plants and animals.
  • It again returns back to rocks when Phosphate sediments from oceans are absorbed.
  • The only difference in both cycles being that phosphorus is not cycled through atmosphere whereas nitrogen is.
