Who is H. J. McCloskey?
Henry John McCloskey (1925–2000) was an Aust-ralian moral philos-opher and wri-ter. McCloskey was Profe-ssor of Philo-sophy at La Trobe Univ-ersity in Melbourne. After grad-uating from the Univer-sity of Melbourne, he had appoint-ments at the University of West-ern Australia and the University of Melbo-urne before taki-ng up a chair at La Trobe.
He was presi-dent of the Austra-lasian Associ-ation of Philos-ophy in 1978. McCloskey is kno-wn for his sheriff scen-ario, a thought experi-ment he used to criticize "extreme" utilitarianism, or what la-ter came to be kno-wn as act utilita-rianism.
