The status systems of chiefdoms and states are similar in that both are based on differential access to resources. nevertheless, a key distinction is that differential access in chiefdoms is still very much tied to kinship.
A chiefdom is a type of hierarchical political organization in non-industrial societies that is typically based on kinship and in which formal leadership is monopolized by legitimate senior members of select families or 'houses.' In comparison to the general population, these elites constitute a political-ideological aristocracy. While chiefdoms are societies where everyone is ranked in relation to the chief, states are socially stratified into largely distinct classes based on wealth, power, and prestige.
Force is simply embedded in structural relations, and chiefdoms become states through the introduction of slaves, uneven growth in access to land and other resources, and the gradual monopolization of the legitimate use of violence.
