Most experts now endorse the theory that the Revolution was a political conflict that was caused by irreconcilable differences about how the American colonies should be governed.

Many Americans continued following British ways as eagerly as ever even though hostility remained after the war. One of the two leading American political parties, in the 1790s, sought a "rapprochement" with Britain.
