The Electoral College is the process we use to elect the President of the United States. enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, its purpose was to allocate presidential suffrage to the 50 states. It is designed to ensure that the most populous states do not overwhelm the smaller states when electing a national leader.

  • Every four years, voters elect a group of voters whose sole purpose is to elect a president and vice president. This group of voters is called the Electoral College. Choosing voters in each state is a two-part process.
  • First, political parties in each state select lists of potential voters around the time of the general election.
  • Second, in general elections, voters of each state choose their own voters by voting.
