The speak-er of the house follows the vice president in the line of succession for the presi-dency, according to the Presidential Succession Act of 1947.
Under the 1947 act any per-son serving as acting President can be sup-planted or bumped from the acting presi-dency by an officer high-er in the order of succession. Finally, the act req-uires that any Cab-inet officer, by serving as act-ing President, auto-matically vacates his Cabi-net position.
This Act estab-lishes the line of succession to the pow-ers and duties of the off-ice of Presi-dent of the United States in the event that neither a Presi-dent nor Vice President is able to "dis-charge the powers and dut-ies of the office".
