The Tiananmen Square protests which are also known in China as the Fourth June incident was students led protests which took place in Tiananmen Square in Beijing in the year 1989. This movement is also known by the name of the Democracy Movement. The students started these protests on April 15 and the protesters were forcefully suppressed by the government on June 4 when the government imposed martial law all over Beijing and also sent military troops to occupy the central parts of Beijing. The troops went with assault rifles and tanks and used this power on the demonstrators. The death toll of this event is estimated in hundreds whereas thousands were wounded.  

The reforms that the government of China made in the 1980s led to nascent market economy and that proved to be beneficial for only some people but many were affected due to it. During that period of time, the most common grievances included inflation, corruption and restrictions on political participation and people demanded accountability of government, freedom of speech, democracy and for their demands, around 1 million people gathered in the square.
