Francesca has 63 cm of ribbon. She will cut it into two pieces so that the longer piece is 15 cm longer than the shorter piece.

{ l = s + 15

l + s = 63
(s + 15) + s = 63
2s = 63 - 15
2s = 48
s = 48 
       2
s = 24

l + s = 63
l + 24 = 63
l = 63 - 24
l = 39

S = 39 cm
