I can think up of 10 steps to become a successful business owner:
1). Love what you do.
2). Take small steps to achieve large things.
3). Learn from others.
4). Self-promotion and confidence is key.
5). Consistently take action.
6). Make a plan.
7). Build yourself a reputation. (hopefully good)
8). Start your idea early.
9). Build a team of trusted allies (you can't do it alone)
10). Keep your attitude positive.
