For a long time, sociologists and anthropologists have emphasized the idea of a "dominant" caste in order to comprehend Indian village life. The phrase "dominant caste" was first used by M N Srinivas to describe the caste in a hamlet that is numerically dominant and also holds the most economic and political sway (Srinivas 1987).
Louis Dumont later argued that domination only results from economic strength, not from other aspects like numerical strength, and that this power only comes through control of land (Dumont 1970). The second meaning of caste dominance is the one that is currently most frequently used in literature and is the one that is used in this context; the term caste system refers to the caste group that owns the bulk of the land.
Although some of the sociological and anthropological research is now somewhat out of date, the idea of the dominant caste still seems to be crucial to understanding several critical economic and political results in rural India today. Some significant ramifications of this caste system phenomena have been examined in my research (see Anderson 2011).
