When the ribosome reaches a uga, uag, or uaa codon on the mRNA, it halts because none of these codons has a corresponding tRNA. these three sequences are called stop codons.
What are stop codons?
A stop codon is a single triplet of nucleotides that marks the completion of protein production. You can see the line of messenger RNA passing through a ribosome if you are familiar with how proteins are generated within cells (do ribosomes and transfer RNA sound familiar?). The ribosome and transfer DNA are informed by a stop codon that the process can end and the new polypeptide chain can be released.
