What are parasomnias?

Generally, Disorders that interfere with sleep are referred to as parasomnias. While you are sleeping, you may engage in abnormal movements, conversation, feelings, and behaviors; yet, your bedmate may mistakenly believe that you are awake.  Examples include sleep terrors, problems, and sleep paralysis.

The episodes of writhing, screaming, and intense fear that are characteristic of sleep terrors take place while the individual is still in the REM stage of sleep.

Sleepwalking is a common symptom of sleep terrors, which may also present themselves throughout the night.

Sleep terrors may also exhibit themselves as night terrors. In the same way that sleepwalking is considered to be a kind of parasomnia, the terrifying dreams that people have during their sleep are also included in this category.
