I am not doing so well, though I am trying my best, life here starts before sunrise. Everyone wakes up early to share the work, it may be hard work but so is cooking supper. It is hilly and mountainous further inland. The land is covered in dense forests, wood is very important because of it's uses and the only thing we use for cooking and warmth; I injured my hand cutting lumber today so it is still not well; an infectious rat bit my thumb so it is now severed. My father I ask of you, do not forget me, but have mercy and pity my terrible case. I know if you did but see me, you would cry to me; for I have only one suit. But even though it's a strange one, it is very well guarded.

I pray for you to remember my love for all my friends and close family. I hope all my brothers and sisters are in good health, and as for my part I have set down my strong state of mind to do something that certainly will be; that is, that the answer of this letter will be life or death to me. Therefore,father, send as soon as you can; and if you send me anything let this be the mark.
