In 1870 a Massachusetts shoe manufacturer imported 75 Chinese workers to break a strike. This event ignited nationwide interest in Chinese immigration and ultimately led to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the first law ever passed by the United States banning a group of people based solely on race or nationality. People of the West Coast attributed declining wages and economic troubles to the hated Chinese workers. To appease them, Congress passed it by suspending Chinese immigration to the United States. The reason why the Chinese Exclusion Act was enacted in 1882 was to prevent an excess of cheap labor. The law reduced the income of all workers and caused sharp declines in manufacturing, mining and agriculture. The results show that Chinese and other workers have supplemented economic production, and the exclusion of Chinese has negatively affected economic development in the western United States. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 prohibited the immigration of Chinese workers. The Chinese Exclusion Act was the first law passed and enforced to prevent immigration of all members of a particular ethnic group or ethnic group. This also marks the beginning of immigration regulation.
