The neutral stimulus changes into a conditioned stimulus when it is subjected to conditioning.
According to some, anxiety disorders like panic disorder can be taught. With classical conditioning, this is doable. For instance, a woman regularly purchases a book from the bookshop each week. Here, the bookshop serves as a neutral stimulus. The proprietor of the bookstore then one day put his grumpy dog in front of the store. The following week, the woman went to the bookshop, but she had a difficult time getting inside since the dog continued barking at her. She now experiences anxiety or panic. At this point, the bookshop acts as a conditioned stimulus. The woman has now discovered that the dog will now bark at her anytime she enters the bookstore.
