The important strategy to prevent puerperal infection include Strict aseptic technique which includes hand washing by all health care personnel involved.
What is puerperal infection?
A puerperal infection occurs when bacteria infect the uterus and surrounding areas after a woman gives birth.
Also known as a postpartum infection
About 10% of pregnancy related deaths are caused by these infections.
It is caused due to trauma to the abdominal wall, genital and urinary tracts during childbirth or abortion.
This trauma allows bacteria to enter normally sterile environments of genital tract.
The most common puerperal infection is endometritis (inflammation of the uterine lining).
