In order to describe the positive and negative effects of settling  the West, a survey of reliable sources on the motivations of colonization and its effects on American society is necessary.

What motivated the settling the West?

The population was attracted by the promise that in the West there would be job opportunities, fertile land and a gold rush, which would increase the population's quality of life.

The formation of communities in the American West was possible due to the construction of trails and railroad, which allowed the availability of supplies and faster travel to the West by rail.

Therefore, mining opportunities and work in livestock were the main motivating factors for the settling of the West.
