3. Fables are short, entertaining stories that cleverly depict animals with very human qualities. The animals speak, display emotion, and display traits such as vanity, pride, and ambition. Despite their entertainment value, the primary purpose of fables is to teach a
lesson, or moral, by poking fun at our follies and selfish tendencies in an exaggerated way. Parents often read fables to young children to teach them to be virtuous, but young and old alike can enjoy and learn from fables.
