3x-10y=17
replace
x = -6y + 1 into 3x-10y=17
3x-10y=17
3(-6y + 1) -10y=17
-18y + 3 - 10y = 17
-28y = 17-3
-28y = 14
y = 14/-28
y = -1/2
x = -6y + 1
x = -6(-1/2) + 1
x = 3 +1
x = 4
solutions x = 4 y = -1/2 or (4,-1/2)
