Your friend remarks that the woman must have been in the tropics and contracted a form of filariasis that produces elephantiasis. You disagree, saying that it is more likely that the woman had a radical mastectomy (removal of the breast because of cancer). Explain the rationale behind your answer.

right lymphatic duct in a radical mastectomy, lymph nodes in the nearby axilla and surrounding region are removed along with the cancerous breast to try to prevent the spread of cancer cells via the lymphoid system. lymphatic vessels from the limb on the affected side are tied off, and because there is no place for the lymph to drain, over time lymphedema causes swelling of the limb.
