Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are referred to as a cycle because the end product of one process serves as the starting material for the next reaction. During cellular respiration, sugar and water are the starting materials, and carbon dioxide and water are the byproducts. Water and carbon dioxide are the starting material for photosynthesis.
