Compare and contrast the political social and economic characteristics of the Chesapeake southern middle and New England colonies class=

Respuesta :

The Thirteen Colonies were the British colonies on the east coast of North America that revolted in 1775 and declared their independence as the United States of America on July 4, 1776.

These colonies were quite different from each other, both in geographical location and in prevailing views. In general, three groups can be distinguished in the 18th century:

  • To the north, in New England, lay fairly barren, rocky areas. Industry and fishing flourished there and trade was mainly conducted. Puritan, Calvinist values predominated.
  • South of New England were regions with more variety. New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania were more cosmopolitan than the more northerly regions. New York, a melting pot of nations of all kinds, was primarily a trading city, and hence much looser than Boston in Massachusetts, which was further north. Philadelphia in Pennsylvania was the largest city of the English colonies in the 18th century.
  • A third group of colonies extended south of New York and Pennsylvania. They were agricultural, fertile areas growing rice, indigo, tobacco and other crops. The plantations worked by African slaves were more in the coastal areas and were run by aristocratic families. More inland, against the mountains, lived and worked free peasants with a more democratic attitude.

As important as these differences were politically important in the 18th century, they were gradually weakened and leveled out over the course of the 19th and especially the 20th century.
