Well a patent typically means that nobody else can copy what you made, like it is protected. So in the sentence I would think that patent would mean that his cup shape invention was protected, but I don’t seem to see an answer for it. But if I had to pick one, my best guess would be “The right granted by a government to an inventor to make or sell an invention”.
