Foreshadowing is a literary technique that the authors use to advance information about events that will happen later in the work. The author does this, to cause suspense and make the reader curious, motivated and instigated by reading.

An example of foreshadowing can happen in a text where one of the characters loses one of his boots. This foreshadows a moment when, afterwards, the character witnesses the death of a loved one, or loses his home, his job, or another very important element for him.

Another example can be seen in a text in which a character buys poison to kill rats and is later poisoned.
