Speed is a scalar measure (ex: 5 m/s) and only has magnitude 
If you add a direction to it (ex: 5 m/s East) you are making it a vector 

Velocity is a vector. 

Notice the difference in notation: 
Velocity is represented by a V with an arrow above 

Speed is represented by either a V or a U with no arrow above (because the arrow signifies that it is a vector)
