An archetype is a universal story element. It is a story element that can be found in many stories. One example is the damsel in distress story element. In many different stories there is a woman who is in trouble and needs to be saved. Often she falls in love with the person who saves her and gets married. Examples of this include Shrek and Snow White. Another archetype is the mentor character. There are many mentors throughout literature such as Merlin in The Legends of King Arthur, Gandalf in the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series, as well as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series.
