Facial expressions hold very important position in our social communication with people from diverse culture and backgrounds. There is along debate going on for a very long time that are facial expressions innate and universal or learned through the experiences of life.
However, a study was performed in MIT where the scientists assessed the mind’s eye of people from diverse cultures (Easterners and Westerners) and reconstructed their mental representations facial expressions of emotion.
The results of their study demonstrated that Westerners represent their emotions with some specific facial movements that are common in their whole group but Easterners do not. In fact, Easterners manifest emotional power with different activity of eyes. Therefore, it was concluded that Facial expressions of emotion are not culturally universal .
