The Great Chain of Being is a Christian doctrine that derives from Plato and Aristotle, but that was fully developed in Neoplatonism. The doctrine tells us of a strict hierarchy in which all life is ranked according to God. At the top of this structure we find God, and the chain progresses downward to angels , stars, the moon, kings, noblemen, humans, animals and plants.
