Raven Brackman is the ”An Unlikely Heroine” character, during the Great war she was living her own personal torture chamber in the barracks of the Ravensbruck concentration camp.
She was born with a condition similar to cerebral paralysis and when her mother died in the incinerator she had to serve herself and her best friend Deidre. At the age of twenty two she was able to translate the camp’s events because she learned German so she enlisted in the camp brothel as a ploy to pry secrets for lapses in strategy.
Actually she would utilize these moments of weakness in planning her escape.
Her best friend wanted to be free as well, they decided to try it or die trying. They knew that both would surpass the hell of the Holocaust so that their future descendants would know that any obstacles could be eradicated though drive and raw courage. How they planned the escape and the arrival of that night are the most intense moment of the story. That night the guards were passed out from drinking a lot and the girls opened the door of Stalag 7 and stole out into the cold of the night. They were running to that freedom that they had hoped and finally reached a new life
In April 1945 a Soviet soldier found Raven by the roarside, she had her number tattooed on her arm: 777777. That soldier was astonished at the resilience of these young friend who had survived the unspeakable horrors of the Third Reich.
