The Second Continental Congress was seeking to assure the King that the Colonists did not want independence, when the "Olive Branch Petition" was sent to King George III in 1775.
Further Explanations:
Olive Branch Petition was the final effort by the colonies to avoid war against Britain. It was adopted in the Continental Congress on 5th July 1775 and was approved on the third day of adoption. Though the invasion of Canada was approved much earlier but the petition attempted the final plea to King George III to prevent conflict. Further, the petition was preceded by the “Declaration of the Causes” and “Necessity of Taking up Arms” which helped the further success of the declaration.
On 2nd July, 1776 Lee Resolution was approved for the liberation from British rule without opposition from any of the State. Five-member commission enlisted the declaration which was then polled in Congress for final approval. The original document was drafted by Thomas Jefferson, that was also the final version of the declaration and explained that why congress had polled to declare liberty from Britain.
