Jason solved the following equation to the find the value for x.

-8.5x-3.5x=-78
X=6.5

Describe how Jason can check his answer.

(I’m thinking of how to describe it, but I kinda need more help...)

We check the answer by plugging in the value for x into the equation and seeing if the result is a true statement.


[tex]x=6.5[/tex]


[tex]-8.5 x - 3.5 x = -8.5(6.5) - 3.5(6.5) = -55.25 - 22.75 = -78 \quad\checkmark[/tex]


We got -78 like we needed to, so the answer checks.

- 12x = - 78 ---(i)

x = [tex]\dfrac{-78}{-12}[/tex] = 6.5

Therefore, Jason's answer is Correct!

To check th' answer, substitute the " x " in the Eqn. (i) :-

[tex]\boxed{- 12 × (6.5) = - 78}[/tex]
