Even though its biggest ally and supporter, the USSR, had collapsed, Cuba was not ready to give on the communism and its government remained loyal to their ideology. It did had some bed effects, mainly economically, as the USSR was the biggest trading partner, but Fidel Castro manged to get through the crises and continue in the direction that started with his rule in the country. Cuba remains a communist country even nowadays, though there are some slight changes, the basis are still kept.
