The globe's mountain glaciers are shrinking because they are melting. As glaciers melt, there is less water stored on the continents because when the water melts it goes into the oceans. There needs to be more precipitation over glaciers and more of that water needs to be stored in order to restore equilibrium when glaciers melt. Sea level increases as glaciers melt.
