Cooperative-Learning Activity Using the Quadratic Formula to Plan a Patio
Professionals, such as architects, engineers, contractors, and project managers, work collaboratively
to successfully complete quality projects. In this activity, you will need to help your group recommend
to a homeowner one of two patio options. Below is the information you will use to help with this
project.
A homeowner wants to build a patio around a 35-foot by 20-foot rectangular swimming pool.
The homeowner has two options and a budget of $40,200 (which all needs to be used) for the
patio.
Option 1 Surround the pool with a concrete band of equal width on all sides. The concrete
costs $50 per square foot.
Option 2 Surround the pool with a tile band of equal width on all sides. The tile costs $80 for
each square foot tile.
