She breaks all the rules and her classes are my favorites, even though she’s a bit loopy and constantly jumps from topic to topic. Like yesterday. She started by reciting this ancient dodo poem about how no one’s an island, how we’re all connected, and how any one person’s death diminishes everyone. The poem ends by saying: “never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.” Ms. Talanoa asked us what we thought it meant. I said it was probably a storm bell, tolling to warn the dodos to do something before they ruin the planet. She said that the “thee” in the poem means “you,” and she gave me this penetrating look that made me squirm. She can be weird like that.
