Empirical Formula of a Hydrate
Ex: During a lab, you heated a 1.500g sample of a hydrate over a bunsen burner to remove the water.
The mass of the anhydrous sample after heating is 0.7370 g. Calculate the empirical formula of the
hydrate.
Find the mass of the anhydrous salt and the mass of the water that has been dried out. Convert the grams of both
substances to moles. Divide by the lowest number of moles to obtain the ratio and write the formula.
